Hippo Cup 2016 - Rockland Community Sailing

Laser Sailors race for Hippo Cup

Racing sailors took to the waters of Rockland Harbor on Saturday to compete for the honor of hoisting the coveted Hippo Cup!  Hosted by the Apprenticeshop, the event saw 7 boats compete in 5 to 10 knot northeast winds.  At the end of the day, it was Tenants Harbor's Chris Schreiber who took home the Hippo, with Tom Jamieson of Belfast taking second and Guy Polyblank third.

Racing was held under cloudy, drizzly skies.  Clapp did a great job of keeping the racing going, with some large shifts making course changes necessary.  9 races were run with a tight fleet making for  plenty of position changes.  Only a few points separated most of the fleet!  The father and son duo of Mike and Mark Gaffney were very competitive, with Syd Sewall and Parker Chamberlin also challenging!

The Hippo cup is the second event of the fall Laser frostbite season, which started two weeks ago at the Loon Cup, hosted by the Lake Cobbossee Yacht Club.  More racing is planned for the fall, with racing in Rockland every other weekend and more competition in Portland in November.  For more information, go to http://mid-coast-laser-fleet.blogspot.com/ or contact Chris Schreiber at chris.schreiber59@gmail.com.

N e w   L o c a t i o n ! ! !

Our sailing venue has moved to the Rockland Harbor.  After a decade of being in Thomaston (Thank you Chris!) we are relocating to the Apprentice Shop in Rockland.  In addition to a great venue, there are also storage options.  The current price is $65 ($50 for storage and $15 for gas for the chase boats and other incidentals) for 3 season storage.  Winter storage and access are being evaluated too.  If you are interested in storage, please complete this form.

Our first race at the Apprentice Shop is May 22 @ 10am.  Future race days include June 5th and 19th at 9am.

As it has been a slow start to the season, we are pushing for a big turnout on the 22nd.  See you there.

Hippo Cup and Maine Champion Series

Thomaston, Maine was the venue for the final of the 2015 Maine State Championship Series. A very tight race for the top spots resulted in an epic duel between Josh Saltmarsh and Hank Thorburn for MLC honors. Conditions were an absolute perfect 11-16 knots of wind out of the south. A small but talented and spirited group showed up to race with bluebird clear skies and temperatures in the upper 60’s. Colin Gowland won the regatta with Josh Saltmarsh second and Hank Thorburn third with just one point between them. Saltmarsh was able to finally clinch the Maine State Championship Series with this result combination and will be the man to beat in 2016! Stu Nickerson ended up in third place overall in the MLC with Tom Jamieson in fourth. Thanks to Mike Gaffney and Chris Biggart for running a spectacular final event. See you all next time!!
